-The Nevada Legislature overrides Gov. Gibbons’ veto of its domestic partnership bill.
-Gregory Herek advises Californians against trying to repeal Proposition 8 in 2010.
-Former Vice President Dick Cheney supports same-sex marriage, says “freedom is freedom for everyone.” He would not support a law at the federal level, however.
-Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out to host a panel on religion and homophobia on June 11 in advance of the next Love Won Out conference in Grand Rapids, MI.
-The Senate Judiciary Committee holds hearings on a bill that would grant immigration rights to binational same-sex couples.
-New Hampshire legalizes same-sex marriage.
-“Gay penguins” at the Bremerhaven, Germany zoo hatch and nurture a chick.
-John Corvino challenges the statement “that’s how I was raised.”
-A Christian group in Charlotte, NC plans a counter rally during local gay pride events to help Jesus wash the gay away.
-Recent polls reconfirm that individuals who personally know GLBT individuals are more likely to support marriage equality.
-Tennessee school districts unblock access to GLBT websites in response to the ACLU’s lawsuit.
The particularly gratifying and instructive thing about the Bremerhaven Zoo penguins is that a few years ago–in 2005 and 2006–their keepers attempted to separate the male couples and bring girl penguins in to “tempt” them into heterosexuality. (I wrote a surprisingly impassioned article about this when it happened; you can read it here.) It didn’t work out. As you can see, they’ve stopped. The couples are still together. Now an abandoned chick has loving same-sex parents raising it. Seems like something that applies here. 🙂
I’m still surprised and pleased by Dick Cheney’s statement–though I am generally opposed to him–and by the Nevada Legislature’s override of the veto.
Re Besen, LWO conference article (asterisks mine):
“Focus on the Family says that they are not slamming gays with the workshop, but rather helping friends and relatives of gays learn how to approach the subject while maintaining attitudes that do not accept homosexuality.” *
* Focus on the Family says that they are not slamming gays with the workshop, but rather helping friends and relatives of gays learn how to approach them while maintaining attitudes that do not accept their
humanitysexuality.@ Emproph: Or to put it another way, “We wouldn’t hurt anyone! We’re just teaching other people how to hurt the people they claim to love!”

AKA “Enhanced loving techniques.”
There is a discussion in progress, on Gil Bailie’s Blog site, “Reflections on Faith and Culture,” about reparative therapies. It is under his June post entitled “What did I tell you?” Note that the discussion is initially about Dr. Tiller’s recent murder and abortion issues, but then it bifurcates and one branch takes up homosexuality and reparative therapies.

Wayne Besen rocked Grand Rapids, Michigan last night. There were a couple of Ex gay groupies who were sad that they didn’t get to talk about things other then how religion has a harmful way of hurting LGBT.
The message that came across was that you have a choice to avoid that Exgay rubbish.
It sucks that michiganmessenger.com and other then this blog cared about the presentation. We did have a full room.
