A Note About Our Use of AI

Artificial intelligence is both controversial and seemingly everywhere. It would not be a stretch to say it is already overused. For that reason, we were reluctant to use it at all on Ex-Gay Watch. However, we currently have only a couple of writers with limited time, and there are many important stories to cover.

After the Supreme Court’s 2015 marriage equality decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, many publications that had covered the ex-gay movement and related issues, including Ex-Gay Watch, scaled back or stopped publishing entirely. We kept the site available because its reporting and historical archives document an important period in LGBTQ+ history.

Now, familiar figures in the ex-gay movement, along with some new ones, have returned with revised strategies informed by past setbacks. We are deeply concerned about the harm being done to vulnerable people, just as we were when we began this work more than two decades ago. Yet relatively few publications are covering these developments. They deserve scrutiny.

To help meet that need while we recruit more writers, we will use AI to assist with research and drafting some posts, primarily those focused on factual reporting. Commentary driven by personal experience, passion, compassion, or anger will remain human-written.

We may also use AI to check any post for spelling and grammar. Human review and verification of all research will remain essential, and we take responsibility for everything we publish. Some images accompanying our posts may also be created using AI.

Our purpose is straightforward: to keep producing needed coverage with limited staff. We hope readers who oppose AI will understand our reasons and view this as a measured use of an available resource.

Any post prepared with AI assistance, including proofreading, will carry a disclosure at the end. We want readers to know how our work is produced and to be able to judge it on that basis.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
