Two therapists explain the counterproductive outcomes of reparative therapy.

I’ve mentioned periodically that I know both gay activists and conservative same-sex-attracted Christians who are happily celibate. I also have met a couple of ex-gays who experienced an overall shift in sexual attraction from same-gender to opposite-gender.

But these individuals’ successes were not, to my knowledge, the result of reparative therapy. These folks took responsibility for their thoughts and goals, and chose disciplined courses of action — not the ideological rigidity, parent-blaming, religious stereotypes, sexist role-modeling, self-deprecation, discrimination, and proselytization advocated by reparative therapists.
