Really now, who uses the term “sodomite” anymore except maybe Fred Phelps? The AgapePress, that’s who:
Hartline says last year the not-for-profit San Diego Pride organization was under investigation for employing numerous pedophiles as volunteers and staff during its yearly parade and festival. He believes these pro-homosexual events are generally pornographic and that they are frequented by militant sodomites.
Keep in mind, that’s in the author’s voice, it’s not a direct quote. Also did I mention San Diego pride was July 29th. That’s almost a full month ago and Hartline and the Agape still aren’t over it.
And yet Nancy Brown over at Exodus’ blog links to and reprints Agape stories regularly.
Your link is busted, Dan. I viewed source and figured it out:
https://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/8/222006c.asp
Fix the link… this is definitely worth the read! The pitiful Mr. Hartline couldn’t mention ‘porn’ often enough in his agitprop. And like you said, you can’t tell where Hartline ends and the article’s author begins.
Gee, since Agape”Press” is so careful about not using “gay”, I would have thought they would have been more careful about the sodomite word choice and/or using quotes. I probably either sloppy writing or Agape”Press” has given-up writing from an objective voice.
fixed thanks yo
I used to file stories to American Family Radio (AFR) news back in the 1990’s from here in Australia.
At that stage..I had no idea of the difference between American and Australian Christianity (in the US, Australian Christianity would be viewed as ‘liberal’..although we don’t have the liberal vs. conservative paradigm in Australia…nearly all of the thinking in Christianity here is centre to centre-left..even with a right-wing Government in power).
Anyhoo, as a gay man..working for a Christian radio station (the station accepted and valued me..it was no issue at all) …when I combed through AFR bulletins looking for stories we could use…..I was constantly amazed by the high number of stories about gay issues..and the ‘homosexual agenda’….but was even more amazed about how they would use stories that were days or even weeks old.
Quite often…I would file a story to AFR..and it wouldn’t turn up on air there until the weekend…
I listened to a LOT of AFR bulletins….(sometimes 6am to 9pm each hour..all the way through) and got to know who in the newsroom thought what about what.
Bill Fancher, Jim Duke, Fred Jackson (the News Director) and Chad Groening were always the most homophobic…(and Chad was always doing military stories for some reason…he must be some kind of weekend warrior).
One thing I always remember though was there was a lady newsreader…memory is hazy..but I think her name was Robyn Birchfield…who NEVER ran the homophobic stuff filed by Bill and Chad and Jim and Fred.
She never touched the stuff that belittled other people groups either….black Americans…for example (another hobby horse of AFR – their distaste for affirmative action policies in the US – it wasn’t hard ..even from Australia to pick-up the racism) and you couldn’t help but have a high regard for her for not running of it.
It’s been a few years since I left the AFR-affiliated station here…but I see AFR’s still got the same basic news line-up .but that Fred’s brought on board a couple of new homophobes…Jim Brown and Mary Rettig.
I’ve fired off a couple of emails to Fred …just telling him straight that their Pharisees who wouldn’t have a clue who Jesus is..and what he demonstrated in his grace to sexually active people.
Didn’t do any good.
Fred says he watches over the bulletin content ..to make sure Phariseeism doesnt creep into the news…which I’ve got to say is a pile-of-crap response..
I really sincerely hope that people don’t take Agape Press or AFR seriously……or think that it is in any way representative of Christianity…(well…worldwide Christianity anyway….AFR seems to be fairly representative of a lot of American Christian thinking unfortunately…)
As a gay Christian who worked closely with AFR for years……..free free to consign AFR to the Fred Phelps looney bin…because AFR’s mindset is essentially the same as Phelps….they just try to package it more palatably to try and make it look like it’s mainstream Christian sentiment..when it’s clearly not.
I did the Christian thing and gave AFR the benefit of the doubt when we first hooked-up.
I was wrong.
It doesn’t take much effort to find out that James Hartline is not sane. He believes that he’s a great prophet that is going to save the nation when God heals him of AIDS.

Agape Press knows this and they just don’t care. They have no integrity, whatsoever. If they did, they wouldn’t repeat the garbage that Hartline spews.
“Agape?” Doesn’t that have something to do with “Love?” Like “God is Love?” So AgapePress should be the Love Press, no? So, how can so much hate fill the air, when “love is in the air?” Silly questions, I know, but the Gay Species like to know. Besides, doesn’t AgapePress know that “sodomite” is etymologically incorrect for “homosexual?” After all, aren’t fundamentalists biblical hermeneuticists par excellence? How come they keep getting it wrong? Maybe God does NOT speak through a book, only Allah. Oh, that’s right, a fundamentalist is a fundamentalist, Christian or Islamic or Judaic notwithstanding! But when did Christians begin putting their faith in a BOOK, rather than a PERSON? Yes, I remember, Calvin, that biblical and hermeneutic expert. The one that determined humans are totally depraved and the Bible is the literal and inerrant Word of God, the one that made humans depraved and has predestined everyone anyway. So why doesn’t total human depravity deprive humans of all insight into God’s Word? How can any fundamentalist “know” anything? All these questions are making me dizzy. It must the “literal” thing.
“…the Bible is the literal and inerrant Word of God…”
I’ve been thinking that it may be idolatry to call the Bible the “Word of God”. The book of John says:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
…
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
Christians understand this to be talking about Jesus, the inerrant Word of God made flesh. To say that the Bible is The Word is to take the position, power, and authority of Jesus and reassign it to the writings of the apostles.
By doing so, the writings of Paul (who never met Jesus) gain as much or more authority than the recorded words of Christ.
This seems to me to be at least heresy if not idolatry.
Karen Armstrong – in The Battle for God – writes:
Fundamentalists have turned the mythos of their religion into logos, either by insisting that their dogmas are scientifically true, or by transforming their complex mythology into a streamlined ideology. They have thus conflated two complementary sources and styles of knowledge which the people in the premodern world had usually decided it was wise to keep separate. The fundamentalist experience shows the truth of this conservative insight. By insisting that the truths of Christianity are factual and scientifically demonstrable, American Protestant fundamentalists have created a caricature of both religion and science.
“Militant sodomites” — How lovely. Afraid much?
Speaking of militant sodomites…
