Over the weekend I was at a pro-gay conference called Love Breaks Out which is a response to the ex-gay conference Love Won Out in Palm Springs a month ago. One of the most well known ex-gay ministries is named Love in Action. Wayne Besen formed an organization called Truth Win Out to counter ex-gay groups. Peter LaBarbera formed his own anti-gay group Americans for Truth.
People, this needs to stop right now.
I had dinner with Peterson Toscano last night and even the two of us would stumble over and mix-up the names of these groups. I don’t know how we expect the media or the public to make sense of all these similarly named groups.
I have no choice but to announce I’m simply going to ignore the next group which forms and chooses to put any of these words in their name :
Love
Truth
Win, Won, or Wins
Daniel:
I feel your pain! I run Truth Wins Out and I even get confused. All this truth – and someone is lying!
Wayne
No one is lying Wayne, they just don’t identify with the same truth you do. They are “formerly identified” with your truth.
[snark=off]
Damn – there goes my “Love wins truth” (or is it Truth Wins Love? or Wins Loves Truth? – I forget). Ah well…. Don’t forget Family, and perhaps Values as well.
I think the similarity is intentional, so that people who think of (or look online for) one might find the other(s) instead. Similar to the ways some spammers (and scammers) use similar names to popular blogs – an attempt to steal traffic, basically – although all these (and like groups) want to get their message out, not to the die-hards, but for people who may be curious and want to go to one site. You never know.
Didn’t fully read the comments: Is that part of it, Wayne? (assuming you did the naming, or have knowledge of it). Gotta remember to come back here and see any response.
So this would be a bad time to announce my new organization, Love Breaks Out Truth In Action To Win Rock Paper Scissors?
All sounds a bit Monty Python and the ‘Life of Brian’
I guess I should rethink co-founding “EXODUS TWO”.
One word for all the Christian ex-ex-gays: NARTHEX.
Thank you all for the laugh. I needed that. But it’s sad, nonetheless.
How about “Focus on the Gay” since that’s what they seem to do best?
I didn’t use any of your “no no” words, Daniel!
🙂
