You should add the scandal that broke this week here in Canada.
An old tape of a Saskatchewan MP surfaced where he talks about “homosexual faggots with dirt under their fingernails who spread diseases” surfaced. It led to two heartfelt apologies from Tom Lukiwski, the MP (who has a long anti-gay voting record.) The government and opposition parties are arguing over whether the apology is enough to keep him from resigning as Parliamentary secretary and/or get kicked out of caucus. Ironically, Tom was elected to that riding (electoral district) to take the place of an MP, Larry Spencer, who himself had to resign over anti-gay comments.
It says alot about how society has progressed in the past few years; it wasn’t too long ago MPs could make anti-gay comments with impunity.
SOME societies.
I wonder, if in Canada, Sally Kern made her christian anti-gay speech. Specifically the part where it says, ‘gays are worst than terrorists’, would that be considered enough so she had to resign, or at least, make an apology?

Had she been a Canadian politician, it would have been a death knell for her political career, in the same manner it it has been for Larry Spencer. The Conservative Party has been overtly protective concerning their national image, and they wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice someone of Kern’s stature.
I agree Joel — at times it seems to be going backwards in some places.
Canada itself does appear to have moved on from some of the frightful individuals who had a lot of dire predictions prior to the changes to the marriage laws.
The sky didn’t fall on Canada. Snow, sure — but not the sky.

You can read the hundreds of newspaper articles written about it here: Googlesearch: “Tom Lukiski”
