Exodus, the exgay political network, may be drifting toward the particular fringe of Christianity represented by Jerry Falwell.

In fact, Falwell is a Featured Speaker at Exodus’ annual conference, scheduled for July 19-23 in Asheville, N.C.

Falwell was a longtime sponsor of HIV-positive exgay activist Michael Johnston — until Johnston was revealed in 2003 to be having unsafe sex orgies with Virginia gay men. (News and commentary by Natalie Davis.)

However, among the Exodus conference’s far-right pundits and broken-sexuality proponents, it’s possible there may be an independent political voice among the speakers:

I would like to know more about featured speaker Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye. The elder Bakkers’ vast PTL teleministry was ruined (Tammy says) by Falwell in the late 1980s.

Exodus fails to disclose Falwell’s involvement in the Bakker family’s problems. Knowledge of what happened would have helped Exodus’ political conservatives better understand Jay’s motives for co-founding Revolution Church, a ministry for individuals cast out of their churches due to appearance or “lifestyle.”
