His parents raised him in a fashion that NARTH director Dr. Joseph Nicolosi would have applauded: He was coached (disastrously) in manly hobbies and sports.

Jeffry G. Ford went on to navigate the tortured contradictions of personhood, sexuality and faith that were required within certain ex-gay belief systems.

His gradual resolution of these contradictions reads a bit like a born-again experience, but his thoughtful and independent reasoning, and the family that emerged, are not quite what the political religious right would hope for.
