AFA has declared that it is boycotting Ford for a year because Ford advertises to gay people, has a non-discrimination policy, and supports organizations that in turn are in favor of gay marriage.
Earlier, AFA had threatened a boycott and in a secret meeting with Ford had made demands that they believe were accepted by Ford.
Don Wildmon of the AFA says:
“We shook hands; we had everything down on paper,” he says, “and when the people who were negotiating with us went back to Ford, [officials with the automaker] killed all of our agreements that took us six months to agree on.”
Although Wildmon claims that everything was down on paper, he has not been able to provide any documentation that Ford had agreed to his demands.
Ford’s decision not to ignore the gay market is, in Wildmon’s view, taking side in the culture war. He couches his boycott language in terms of gay marriage:
The boycott was called after Ford reneged on an agreement with American Family Association to stop funding homosexual groups which promote homosexual marriage.
However, a review of the points demanded by AFA on their boycott website shows that the anti-gay groups had a far more extensive agenda:
At the last meeting on Nov. 28, here is what Ford and AFA agreed on:
1. Ford would not renew current promotions or create future incentives that give cash donations to homosexual organizations based on the purchase of a vehicle.
2. Ford would not make corporate donations to homosexual organizations that, as part of their activities, engage in political or social campaigns to promote civil unions or same-sex marriage.
3. Ford would stop giving cash and vehicle donations or endorsements to homosexual social activities such as Gay Pride parades.
4. Ford would cease all advertising in homosexual websites and media outlets (magazines, television, radio) in the U.S. with the exception of $100,000 to be used by Volvo. The Volvo ads would be the same ads used in the general media and not aimed at the homosexual community specifically.
After the gay community and many others pointed out the ramifications of shunning all customers who are gay or who have friends that are gay, Ford reversed the decision and wrote a letter committing to increase advertising with gay publications. Wildmon does not explain why he waited until today, three months after Ford’s letter of December 14, 2005, to launch his boycott.
In an effort to rally the troops, the AFA claims that:
To counter the pro-family boycott, homosexuals have begun a “buycott” of Ford made automobiles. The success of the boycott will be determined by which group—homosexuals or pro-family—are able to get the most people to support their efforts. The homosexuals have shown that they are dedicated to their cause of homosexual marriage. It remains to be seen if pro-family people are as dedicated to their cause.
While I have not heard of this “buycott”, AFA’s boycott would make me more likely to consider Ford in any vehicle purchases in the coming year. However, I doubt that there will be any noticeable change in Ford’s business either way.
The AFA’s position is extremist. They object to hiring gay employees, diversity training, and even developing “a plan to involve Ford in the day-to-day business of selling vehicles worldwide to gay and lesbian customers.” To seek that Ford not hire people and not advertise to a demographic goes beyond objection to gay marriage and shows clear evidence of hatred. Not hatred of a behavior or a sin, but hatred of a group of people.
Joining AFA in the ranks of extremism are a collection of anti-gay activist groups:
American Family Association
Center for Reclaiming America
Citizens for Community Values
Vision America
Free Market Foundation
WIN Family Services
Liberty Counsel
CatholicVote.org
Point of View Radio
Coalitions for America
Mayday for Marriage
RealMarriage.org
Judeo-Christian Council
Constituent Vote
Faith2Action
Coalition for Marriage and Family
ConservativeHQ.com
Tradition, Family, Property, Inc.
National Association of Marriage Enhancement
Are you friggin’ KIDDING me?!
What have the AFA to gain by doing this? And just how much money are they spending on their anti gay campaigns?
Indeed, I would like to know just what the spending and budget is on the group’s anti gay mailings and ads and all other media they use.
A newborn baby girl was thrown forty feet from a bridge that spanned over railroad tracks. That was just yesterday.
We have safe haven laws in Calif. and a firehouse, where the baby could have been relinquished no questions asked, was a few blocks away.
With all the child abuse, abandonment and violence that is on our streets that kids aren’t safe from, isn’t this money better spent on REAL problems, instead of abstract phantom ones.
Straight folks aren’t getting the message regarding their obligations when they make children.
But the message that gay people are unfit for everything but silence, eclusion and invisibility is loud and clear.
That little baby girl deserved better from the AFA.
I’m guessing that the AFA is counting on Ford’s financial problems to continue much like GM’s have.
That way, a year from now when Ford is in financial straights, the AFA can take credit and look more powerful to their donors.
Sort of like a rooster taking credit for the sun coming up every time he crows.
This is pure speculation on my part, but it’d be interesting if this ‘free advertising’ gave Ford an edge over GM.
I still get ill whenever I look over that list of organizations.
I for one, am looking for a new car and Ford is at the top of my list of prospective makes, any idea where I can send Ford an email letting them know they’ve got a new customer?
“Free Market Foundation”…HMM. Isn’t that a misnomer.
Why would AFA boycott Ford for a year, instead of the usual scenario where the boycott continues until the target changes its policies?
And wouldn’t it make sense for AFA to give their sycophants a clear alternative–a car company that hates proud gays and lesbians as much as they do–to make it even easier to track lost business?
I am a third-time Ford owner, having just bought a new 2006 Ford Escape. I made a point of calling the Ford Customer Relations line yesterday to let them know that I am a long-time Ford customer and am also gay, and that I encouraged them to follow Disney’s lead and simply ignore the “boycott”.
I encourage other gay Ford owners to call and let Ford know that they stand to lose more by giving in to the hate-based crowd than by ignoring them and continuing to market to and support the gay community.
I encourage other gay Ford owners to call and let Ford know…
Better still, call your local Ford dealer. He’s probably feeling a little heat right now
The AFA is relying on Ford’s financial straights (no pun) to claim victory. Let’s see if AFA will boycott a financially solvent automotive company like Honda or Toyota! They have advertised in gay mags and supported community events. I wonder if a year from now Ford makes a profit, then what are they going to do???
AFA are a bunch of cowards!!!
Does anyone here read GayPatriot? I urge you to take a look. Be warned. It’s a toxic site, so protect yourselves. I’ve taken all the torment I can stand from these “gay” brothers.
Read the thread about the “military”. About the fifth one down. Leave a comment. Thanks.
This AFA/Ford item is now hitting the larger news organisations:

I went over to the gay patriot website. Bruce has a military fetish, doesn’t he? I don’t understand how he can be a big fan of an organization that doesn’t let gays participate.
hank and phinky,
Please keep your comments relevant to the topic and this site.
AFA founder Don Wildmon recently admonished a colleague against using “Jewish” words and claimed the average gay person makes over $440,000 per year.

I think I’ll ask for a raise.
I would not buy a Ford if it were the only manufacturer in the world.
Let’s not forget to mention that the ads that he shows are either from other countries that have relaxed rules than we do, were ran well before the boycott was even thought up, or could be taken either way. In fact, the only one that is really relevant is the “Pride” one for Jaguar which says they would donate 1k to GLAAD for any car bought from them, and that was in 2005. Of course, the Wildman’s faithful won’t actually LOOK at the ads, they will just see the ads being cycled through in the animation. And the CBS “scene” being put on the AFA’s site as being “offensive” that Ford “sponsored”, was only 6 seconds long. Seems that Donald Wildman is getting desperate. So much that he’ll do ANYTHING to convince anyone that is still brainwashed by him to go after whatever this “homosexual agenda” is.
