Citizen Outreach has launched a web site, Leave Marriage to the States, at lawfullywedded.com.
The site consists of conservative voices — many of them antigay — that oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment because, they say, the amendment undermines states’ rights.
Among the arguments made is a comparison between the FMA and Prohibition. Advocates for both constitutional amendments wielded the false claim that their amendment banned only an extreme — gay marriage, or hard liquor. It later turned out, of course, that both amendments quite clearly and intentionally banned all forms of alcohol, and every legal form of recognition of a gay relationship.
Nothing undermines states rights more than activist federal judges. The question is not WILL the constitution be ammended, but by WHOM?
If not by the FMA, then it is merely a matter of time before SSM is rendered fait accompli by judicial fiat.
States Rights are meaningless in the post Roe v Wade era. One would think these so-called “anti-gay conservatives” could figure this one out…
It is rather curious to me how anti-gay conservatives have seemed to have coined the phrase “activist judges.” Constitutionally, there are checks and balances, and the judiciary plays an important part in these checks and balances. “Activist judges,” more often than not, are simply looking to protect the rights of certain minorities from the true tyranny that issues from the majority in some cases. It’s just another case of whose ox is being gored: the anti-gay conservatives certainly have no beef about “activist judges” like a certain Alabamian who thought he was above obeying the law….
This is rather amusing. So-called ex-gays are miserable. And it is clear that they want to provide a society so that gays are miserable, too.
And some of them are making money off of doing that.
BTW, regarding Marty’s post, it is clear that anti-gay discrimination has become the racism of the 1990s. I’m sure that we heard similar sentiments following the Supreme Court’s decising in Loving vs. Virginia.
And in a further act of hypocritical posing…
What is the religious conservative solution to the whole gay marriage thing? Ex-States Right-ers and original constitutional intent advocates for Federal Government power-grabbing and constitutional tampering!
HEED THIS WARNING!
If you read carefully the language of the proposed amendment, you’ll see that it divides the world between married couples consisting of ‘the union of a man and a woman’ and ‘everyone else.’
It does not say that the incidents of marriage will be denied only to gay couples; it says they will be denied to ALL unmarried people – including heterosexual couples! The language of this amendment writes discrimination against unmarried people into the Constitution, and it could be used as a basis for prohibiting unmarried people from adopting, from cohabiting, and it could even be used to outlaw ALL sex outside of marriage!
The fundies would love that… don’t tell me they didn’t intentionally write it that way…
