Colbert really plays up the concept the sexual orientation is malleable — he’s hilarious in this, especially on how he ties together “threatdown” items 2 and 1.
A Fox news anchor had said that gay activists couldn’t prove to him that gay marriage wouldn’t lead to people marrying snakes… Colbert replied that a man-snake marriage would be better than gay marriage, as long as it was a man marrying a female snake!
The comment was made on the “Wall Street Journal Editorial Report” by Dan Henninger, who is listed as Deputy Editorial Page Director for the paper. A transcript is available on the WSJ’s opinion website.
Henninger is ignorant of the fact that the marrying of certain animals in some rural Indian tribes is actually traditional there and is done to ward off ‘evil spirits’ (which is what they believe illnesses are). This isn’t done out of desire for the snake. They don’t actually have sex with the snake. It’s a symbolic gesture. Cobras are worshipped in these tribes. It’s not exactly something that translates well to Western Civilization and monotheistic religions, but his comparison to gay marriage violating tradition in the west doesn’t translate either.
As far as I know, there isn’t any abuse going on toward the snakes and it’s far better than some of the other practices that go on in some of these tribes – particularly when someone is believed to have cast a spell on another person. They’re often murdered.
India has one of the most varied of populations with traditions ranging from highly advanced and thoughtful to extremely backward and superstitious, with all points in between. There has been about 800 different languages identified there, 21 of which are recognized as official by the government, along with Hindi and English, which might give people an idea of just how diverse the country is.
OMG…Colbert is a FUNNY man!
But then comedians really point out amazing ironies among humanity. They are quite cogent philosophers.
Colbert’s piece was hilarious. More!
Some of the beginning is cut off – the part about ‘Fort Marriage’. I think it was something like ‘The gays are on the march again. We still have 5 more days of manning the barricades at Fort Marriage”.
Language is bleeped out, but just a warning, if people are sensitive to that.

He kept up the theme on Tuesday night’s show.

Steve, do you remember which news anchor this was?

I hope he made some homophobes twitch. That was hilarious!
The best line in the snake marriage routine:
“I think we can all agree with Henningers logic. If a woman in India marries a snake, gay people in America should have to justify it.”
That pretty much sums up Henningers statement.
