In numerous previous broadcasts, Stephen Bennett claims to have numerous unnamed gay and lesbian friends. In today’s program (12/12/05) Bennett claims he doesn’t know a single person who intends to see Brokeback Mountain. I’m not saying this is contradictory but it’s somewhat doubtful.
S
I listened to the show. He did mention that he knew of no heterosexuals he knew that went to see it, in all fairness. What is ridicolous, is just because it is a gay love story, it is propaganda. I have not seen this movie, but some of us can relate to the story I am sure. He talked about the tragedy of married gay men. The real tragedy, is they shouldn’t have gotten married. Not only did they ruin there lives, but the lives of there spouse and children. He also implied this movie would make some married men leave there wives. To me, which is worse, being gay, or living a lie!
People like Bennett, who not only plan on boycotting the movie, but haven’t read the story-shouldn’t say a thing about it at ALL.
He and so many other ex gays, just don’t want to admit that heterosexual conceit is what’s led to the unnecessary tragedy and implosion of families gay men and women have tried to have in the false presumption they are OBLIGATED to behave and live like heterosexuals.
On the one hand he and other ex gay’s attitude is, but for Jesus….a gay man can and should live happily like a heterosexual.
Forgetting that HETEROS don’t always live happily as heteros.
You can marry, have the kids, whatever passes for being straight, and it still not be right for a person to go through those motions.
Plenty of hets should NEVER have had children. Plenty of hets have married for every wrong reason, but do it anyway because society isn’t willing to accept those who choose not to marry and bear children either.
Stigma…is a powerful thing, yes.
But many has been the time that stigma is misdirected.
This presumtion that ALL people are or should be heterosexual is stupid, stupid, dangerous and impossibly vain.
Just as assuming that all women’s best hope and greatest thing in life to do is bear children.
All the behaviors and situations that belie that, be damned.
It’s dangerous vanity to assume any of those things, and otherwise splendid plans, people and societal organization for realizing one’s real potential is destroyed.
Stephen Bennett, if his past adventures are to be believed…did a lot of people and a lot in his life, very wrong.
And he’s trying to do penance for what he did.
Which would be fine, if he wasn’t trying to make other people do it who don’t choose to and don’t have to.
Being gay is nothing to feel guilt or shame over.
The real shame, is in the vanity that’s more destructive than productive.
And Bennett is just doing more of that, and the same in his stupid crusades against gay couples, or movies about them.
Stephen Bennett is so childish (typical of many extreme Evangelicals)in his narrow and legalistic view of homosexuality. He’s one individual who desperately needs to see Brokeback Mountain. Maybe it will get the message through his thick skull that his childish fantasy is just that, a fantasy. Maybe were he to view Brokeback Mountain he might stop trying to push the extremist Christian agenda and start thinking for himself and have a direct relationship with God as opposed to a pseudo-relationship based on the interpretations of extremist dogmatic people who call themselves Christians. He worships Christian leaders and their interpretations as opposed to trusting God and himself and those wonderful emotions God has created in him including his own gayness.
Brokeback Mountain today received the most nominations for Golden Globes. This just after it received Best Picture from both LA and NY Film Critics. It also was among the top ten of ALL TIME in box office receipts in a three day release period. The momentum for this film is gathering steam and by the time the religious right will get around to boycotting it (and I’m betting they will), they will only add to its appeal.
Already happening…

At least not without pudding
I would say unbelievable, but alas, it is far too believable that people in this country are so worried about anything and everything they don’t understand, that they have to protest, petition, and hate (which by the way is not a family value nor was it something that jesus taught).
Who wants to start a petition in SUPPORT of this movie. Somewhere it will be picked up more nationally/globally. 🙂
Bennett’s playing a gig. How much of a following does he actually have? I’ve never heard of him before coming here. I suspect he buys time on low-power radio stations (is he actually on the radio, or just on the Internet streaming?) in 2d or 3d tier markets (which is cheap to do) and begging for money.
I’d go into the “cheap whore” bit, but that would be a disservice to ladies of the evening.
